The blue violet was voted as the state flower by Rhode Island’s school children in 1897, far surpassing contenders like the rose and pansy. Though beloved, it wasn’t officially adopted as the state flower until 1968. The blue violet symbolizes peace and faithfulness, with its calming blue hue a reminder of Rhode Island’s coastline.
