Brought from England and first planted in Portsmouth in 1750, the purple lilac was named New Hampshire’s state flower in 1919 after a spirited public debate. Chosen for its hardiness and said to reflect the people of the Granite State, the lilac has become a lasting presence in New England gardens ever since.
